2022 Review and 2023 Outlook for US Residential Energy Storage

According to Woodmac’s statistics, the United States will account for 34% of the world’s newly installed energy storage capacity in 2021, and it will increase year by year. Looking back to 2022, due to the unstable climate in the United States + poor power supply system + high electricity prices, based on self-use and peak-valley arbitrage to save electricity costs, the demand for household storage will grow rapidly.

Looking forward to 2023, the global energy transformation is the general trend, and the average level of electricity prices is also on the rise. Saving electricity bills and ensuring electricity consumption are the core motivations for American users to equip household storage. With the improvement of the economics of household energy storage and the continuation of policy subsidies, the US household storage market is expected to further expand in the future.

According to the survey, in 2021, 28% of the new photovoltaic systems installed by photovoltaic installers in the United States (including households and non-households) are equipped with energy storage systems, which is much higher than 7% in 2017; Among potential photovoltaic customers, 50% have shown interest in energy storage, and in the first half of 2022, customers interested in distribution and storage will further soar to 68%.

With the further development of household photovoltaic systems in the United States, there is still broad room for growth in household storage installations. Wood Mackenzie believes that with the accelerated development of the household storage system, the United States is expected to take over Europe by 2023 and become the world’s largest household storage market, accounting for 43% of the global household storage market space.
